New Year, New Me? Again?

It’s  2015, and honestly I look back and wonder what happened to 2014! Which means it’s also time for people to make new year’s resolutions, promises that the average person will break by tomorrow. I want to lose weight, read my bible more, try something new, etc. will often be replaces by, that cake looks good, I’m too busy, or I don’t know what to do. We all face that struggle, we promise to friends, family and the world (meaning all those people who are you friends on Facebook that you haven’t talked to in years) that age old annoying promise, “New year, new me!” Most of us see that and crack back sarcastically “yeah right!” And others will do the same for us.

I think the reason we fail though is that too many times we make those promises thinking that if I just start doing stuff it will all work out, become a habit, and get easier. Then when the road is tough we give up, because it isn’t turing out the way we thought. And there in lies the problem: thought. We think change is in doing stuff but really it starts somewhere else, in our mind. Paul writes  this referring on how to live for God.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2) 

Paul realized you could act like a good Christian and still never change. Real change, in living for God, living healthier, living a better life starts in our mind. In order to change our thought, which for some of you may be harder because you are stubborn (I’m right there with you!). There are three we need to ask and think differently:

1) We need to ask: Why am I doing this?

So why do you want to exercise? Read more? do more? Whats your driving reason. If your reason is just because its the right thing to do, I should do it, or because others are doing it, then you have a weak mental foundation. With out strong purpose in mind, you will always give up because you have nothing to build it on. so why are you doing it? Start strong, do it for God, for family, for a better you?

2) We need to change the thought: I can do this alone!

No you can’t! Don’t kid yourself. Thats why diets often fail, because on your own, you’ve got no one to tell you, the cake is not worth it! Let’s face it life is hard enough yourselves, why would want to face new challenges alone. It’s a recipe for failure. But when we realize we have God on our side first and foremost, and surround our selves with people who care and who will push us (not a friend who will give up just as easily), you can do more than you can imagine!
